Being involved in Huskies with their multiple eye colours I have not yet seen any of my dogs over 4mths old have a change in colour hence my question as to whether it happens in the Koolie as my Shay's eyes have changed.

Shay was 1yr last month, she has had a light green/amber eye (very light shade) with a tiny blueish speck on the inside of her eyes.

I hadn't paid all that much attention to her from last Friday through to Monday morning as she's in the isolation 'bitch' pen as she is in heat.

Monday morning I went to take her for a big run while the boys were locked away & the first thing I noticed were her eyes, her blueish specks had tripled in size & were very noticeable from a distance & her pale greeny eyes have turned to a deep amber. Craig my OH picked it up immediately too when I asked his if he noticed anything different about her.

Eye colour in the Husky is set by the time they are 3mths old & changes very little as they grow. The only ones that take about 4mths old to develop are our green/blue parti eyeds it just defines itself more at 4mths old but doesn't change thereafter.

Shay has always had very red 3rd eyelids, she arrived with them & have never changed & with her eye whites being normally coloured not red I think it is just her (& likely being merle to merle bred) but other than that her eyes seem fine.

Has anyone noticed the same thing in their Koolies? it just strikes me as odd.

can't say i can recall any incident where a mature Koolie has changed eye colour.
I have noticed though that the lighter eye colours like amber can appear to darken, whether this is from light changing or in shade or sun light I can't say, but my original red merle bitch has very clear marble amber eyes and they do look different at times, but as I said I can't say they actualy change, just reflect differently in different light.
Although I swear they darken with her mood

LOL!

Yeah her eyes have definately changed from a pale green amber to a red chocolatey amber with pronounced blue inner eyes, it strikes me as odd but the vet couldn't find anything wrong so just have to see what happens.

Is it possible to get a photo of her eyes for the collection, maybe you have a earlier shot so we can see the changes, no harm in asking.

I'll try to get a before & after

Thanks that would be very interesting, can't wait

O.K got a pic today & hunted for a pic of her eye colour until this change, not a great pic but should be able to see the distinct difference.

I have never seen a mature dog change eye colour & this changed happened in the span of a few days (3days max), which actually coinsides with her having a heat, but it is her 2nd heat with no difference during her 1st.

The vet can't find anything wrong but it is quite odd to me feedback.gif It is a bit trivial BUT no-one I know has seen it occur before, our green eyed dogs always get lighter never change from green to brown amber *she's a freak*

You can see the before pic taken about 2mths ago at 10mths old, she has a pale green with bluey tinge & tiny spot on the innerside of each eye.
Her eyes now are almost brown at the lower half, the blue speck has got much bigger (pic doesn't show it) & is more defined & her upper eye is amber brown & her previous eye colour is only present in her left eye up the top.

too cool, never seen it happen before, I'll drop it on George in genetics and see what he thinks.
Thanks for the photos

Thought I'd update this .....

Shay now has amber brown eyes with a tiny spot of blue on 1 inner eye.

So her eyes went from light green with noticeable blue spot, to orange/green amber from the base of the eye upward & the blue spot on her left eye tripled in size & now her eyes are brown amber with the blue almost gone.....WEIRD!

The vet has checked her out twice & can't find any problems or abnormalities.

She does have very red 3rd eye lids & the vet questions the merle as being behind it all.......

your thoughts to this theory?

Again at a loss, but will pass it on to George
mushoz
yes she is just a freak Tj...I accept it d.gif as long as it isn't anything that affects her we'll just right it off to having 'mood' eyes (that change with her mood)

I did read some material regarding affects on eyes merle has not including wall/pigment loss & pupil issues.....I'll try to find it....

Dog's eye changing color - Answered by Dr. Slome[u]
My mom has a 5 year old dachshund that has one blue eye and one brown. The blue eye has just turned brown. I get scared at any changes in my babies, but my mom is not alarmed by this. Is this normal and I am just over-reacting?

I have heard of brown eyes turning blue but never vice-versa. When it turns blue, it's because the pigment is deficient, so I'm guessing when it's the other way around, the pigment has started to be made and the eye is it's natural color. Why not call your vet to be sure? I'm sure they can answer this one over the phone.

Usually when eyes change colour, it is due to age and genetics but this would usually happen before 6 months old. While I would not suggest panic, I would not be able to say it is normal. I would have the eye checked by your Vet, or by Veterinary Ophthalmologist if needed, to ensure that there is no problem. There are malignancies like melanomas, that can be responsible for pigmentary changes, but sometimes the pigmentary changes may be benign and nothing to worry about.

Hi Mushos,

I have had the same a change in eye color in a Brother to the Dam of your dog out of a later litter but the same lines.

This change occured at about 18 months and was unexplained

I assume that this has something to do with the genetics in this line for a dog and his neice to have the same thing happen.

This line came from victoria the registrar should be able to tell you more than I can and may know of others from those lines that also changed.

Dice's eyes have gone from a mid blue when I got him to a really whiteish blue now, with an indigo ring around the iris being all that is left of the darker colour

IPB Image

here is an earlier one that sort of shows the difference

You can still see the darker ring in the earlier photo, but the rest of his eye is much blue-er than now.

Funny, his coat has got darker, but his eyes have got lighter :-)
