Welcome to the forum. Certainly worth considering a rescue - I took the beautiful Perry over three years ago and she combines brains with beauty - just perfect. You cannot go wrong with a Koolie.

Feel free to pick my tiny brain, I use to teach tracking at the RAAF Police Dog Training Schooland the Australian Protetive Services where I was their Chief Instructor, recently I ran 14 workshops on tracking and tracking judges, (2005/6)

A mystery! Diello.gif My interest is peeked, if you would like to share, we are all ears.

Oh and please don't take what we have been saying about the RSPCA to heart, as I said I don't know who to be angry at just individual shelter which give the whole a bad rep or the CEOs running the whole shebang.

I have worked with some wonderful employees of the RSPCA and I am sure that you were a credit to office.
I may want to tweak you for advice as we get to know each other better if you didn't mind that is. beer.gif

Mal,

I just notice that you are from Townsville!!! just up the road (bout three hours) You must know Terri-Lee and her border collies and now that I think about it you would be the one she mentioned to me that was looking for a Koolie next year.

Best thing I ever did was get my Koolies, not that I have much time to do much with them yet other than to get their Level 5 in Obedience. We are starting an Agility club next year so things should hot up then.

Silhouette,
who would you like to be in control, which end of the lead calls the shots, or who do you think should call the shots, after all they dont do anything because they love you but to avoid correction and to please you, think about that and you prehaps you could start from their,(talk to me),
Mal

Mal I live on the tablelands not far from Terri-Lee at Butchers Creek via Malanda, I have four Koolies

2 red merle girls from Sheringa Koolies in Victoria
1 red merle girl from Turramina Koolies in Brisbane
1 (hopefully) red male from Brescot Koolies in NSW.

I have not started in agility as yet as I am still working on getting them all through to their level 5 in dog obedience. Girls are all through, I just have to start with Smith, but I have done a lot of work with him at home so shouldn't take too long to scoot through the classes. He needs more social manners.

I have only done a smattering of classes with the girls in agility so we are very much beginers, not haveing anyone up here to train. Terri-Lee is going to take on training next year so looking forward to that.

Hi demal4
When you have had a koolie a while you'll understand...we think they think that we are in control, but we really know that they know that we don't know that they are in control....you know??? Our koolies are only on lead at meetings, which they manage suprisingly well considering that is all the practice they have, but here at home they are only 2 or 3 feet away from you at all times anyway, unless working of course because working takes precendence over all else. What I really need to learn is how to get them to stop properly on command (working enthusiasm again)have been meaning to get TJ to give me a lesson on that one (I'm a farmer not obedience person).
Have been trying to change my signature, all these smart people with photos I thought I would put one in myself but it doesn't seem to want to show. Will have to try and come up with a clever comment instead. beer.gif

Silhouette, 30 thirty years of being a professional instructor for the RAAF< APS & beyond tells me that the enlightened owner/handler is allways in control irrespective of breed of dog, I have a Rottweiller, Curly Coated Retriever & an Australian Kelpie to Australian Obedience champion, tracking champions, agility/jumpers Master, endurance ete, etc, I am only trying to make a point here not be a smart arse, a koolie will not be an exception , they are all different, just like a kelpie too a GSD or Rotty, may be we need to talk some more, if you would like,

Tjukurpa,
I see you are an obedience judge, what levels may you judge, do you do agility or any other as we (my) club may be intrested in getting you up if you were intrested, we have a monster easter weekend for 2009 valued at $6000+ four days and nights of trials agility, obedience etc, I could send you a flyer if you give me an address,
mal

Thank you for the offer I am honoured.

I would love a flyer if only to send to our members to offer them a chance to compete or watch, it sounds like a very ambitious event; I wish you all the best.

No can do on the Judging side though, both my husband Ron and I have taken a leave of absence for a year to sort out the new home and our dogs and the rescue and every other little project we have on our plate.

We live three hours from the city and many trials are four hours so the extra cost when the fuel went up was just one too many burdens.

Agility like showing employs too much math for my even tinier mind, prefer to compete but hope to gain experience to face that challenger before I get too old.

We were completing our Open license when we decided to have a break, so we will have to start again there when we resume.

I've been involved in Obedience for 35 years and received my trainers license with Southern in Vic back in the eighties.

So just beginners compared to you, but love all the sports and the positive impact it has had on dogs in general and the community as a whole.

Look forward to the flyer, maybe you could post it up here under announcements.

The Koolie Club is hoping to hold a sheep workshop in Qld in April next year, near Bracken Ridge, maybe you could make it, there will be a lot of Agility interested people attending.
We are considering seeing how hard it would be to get some equipment for the day and combine the two events, if you can offer any advice we would be pleased to hear from you, if we can arrange it maybe you would be interested in offering your services for the day, possibly a demo and a bit of training guidence.

I am so pushy it's embarrassing. haha.gif

Hi demal4, I have no doubt you have tons of experience and no doubt you are firmly in control. Don't worry I have control of my dogs when I need to excert it, but after 20 years experience with koolies, we've found we rarely need to as they are so tuned into us and what work we are doing it is like ESP at times. A koolie will blossom if allowed to evolve not just be controlled. I'm no dog trainer I admit that so cannot speak in the language you might be used to so I hope I have explained myself, perhaps someone else can do it better. dogwalk.gif

Hey you are not pushy, just intrested, its 2009 easter not 2008 for the Canine Easter grand Prix, want you come, free accomodation at trial (camping) and before and after you can stay with us or Dave the other organizer, give it some thought, fuel would be your only expense,

Hi Mal
Was wondering if you could send a flyer for the big easter trial or information. I do both agility and obedience with my border collie Inka, German Coolie Xena and will start with my 13 week old puppy Gabby. We will be going to Melbourne next year in August for the National Agility. Will you be going to that? Normally we will go to Mount Gambier for easter to do obedience and agility. 2009 there wont be no Nationals as the next one is 2010over in Perth.
cheers

Thanks for the offer Mal I would love to attend, it would be another reason to catch up with everyone up there with their Koolies.

What's involved in sponsoring a trophy for the highest Koolie score over the event, be pretty cool if lots of Koolie turned up. question1.gif

tjukurpa,
hi, no problems with sponsoring a koolie type award, could i suggest that it could be one of two possibilitys:
1: Higest scoring koolie for the easter period
2: Koolie with the most & highest qualfying scores for the easter weekend, or the
3: best obedience or agility koolie for easter, or even,
4: a medallion for any koolie scoring over 190 , or 180, 170 or,
5: the fastest qualfying koolie in agility or jumpers, etc, etc,
6: happy to work out any possible,
7: suggest sponsor value should be around= $50, $100 or cover medallions for successfull koolies,

Mal demal4

The trophy sounds good
Do you have a catolog to select from or do we organise our own.
If we do, who do we send it to.
Already getting emails from members who are keen to participate.

tjukurpa,
hey this really sounds wonderfull, we can give you (all) free camping, from say the thursday prior to the tuesday after and we could also billet or camp you if you want to come earlier than thursday and leave later than the tuesday after, not at the show grounds but with us (members of either Ingham or Townsville clubs would love to have as many as would like to come)
HEY REMEMBER THIS IS EASTER 2009 THO).
NOW REFERENCE the trophy, we are giving all cash prizes except for the excellent medallions for the GSDs that score 190 or more,
so think hard would you like one trophy for errrrr! "would that be obedience or agility or both" , we could get it or you could bring it, and we would advertise it in the Qld Dog World (Monthly magazine to all registered members of the CCC Qld) on the programme and on the day, the possibilities are endless, you may negoiate or discuss the possibilities with myself as mangar of the sub committe of three for the two clubs, what ever is decided must be set in concrete (ink by June 2008) so that gives us all plenty of time, prehaps think about what will give the Koolies the best value and coverage,
Mal: demal4

Hey so cool, I like the idea of one for Agility and one for Obedience.
I have an idea of what I'd like, we have been thinking of this for a while.
So we would have it designed here and bring it up.
How early must it be up there for it to be included in the Gazzette.
