hi im thinking about buying a koolie and want to do some more research, so here i am
dogz6
Let me be the first to welcome2.gif you Kelli, we've had 4 Koolies, so I'm bias of course, & I think they're the best dogs around. We've got 2 Koolies & an Australian Shepherd at the moment, I use them for pigs & as walking parteners, we're doing a 30km walk tomorrow even the 10yo will be coming, they're active dogs & I love them. Hope you find the right one & I know you'll never look back. Pup.gif

Hi Kelli and welcome. You've come to the right place if you want to talk to a bunch of ppl who are crazy in love with their Koolies :-)
Do you anticipate doing sports or work with it if you get a Koolie?
Ceejay
welcome2.gif We are all probably biased here. haha.gif I have one Koolie called Ceejay, I did a lot of research for a new dog before I decided on Koolies. I came across the breed my looking at rescue sites and there was a dog called a Koolie cross and thought what is that. Well looked them up and have never looked back. Ceejay is quite special, intelligent, loyal and personality plus. I have a rescue too she is Kelpie x cattle and she is pretty darn special too, and I don't think she would have turned out the way she did without Ceejay's influence. Plus koolies all look different so each and everyone of them is unique.

Have noticed a couple of times lately the stories about how ppl came to decide on a Koolie, and was thinking that a disproportionate number of times ppl had these stories of chancing on a breed they'd never heard of and to me that seems likely to make us all feel 'lucky' to have Koolies. I sure do.

Kelli - what is it that interests you in Koolies?

Hi Kelli, I'm pretty new to this forum too. I'm sure you'll learn a lot about the Koolie breed from the members on this great forum. Verycool.gif
royalla
why i choose koolies that easy
1. i love things different like their colour all are different from each other.
2. 99% of koolies are non aggressive and i was sick of going to agility and seeing aggressive dogs with dumb owners who can not read dog language and take their nasty dogs into range of non aggressive dogs.
3. i like Aussie made lol
4. i have always liked working dogs but kelpies can be a bit scatty and a lot of heelers are aggressive, my husband now ex did not like border collies and i did not won't a long hair dog so that put the Aussies out.
it all boiled down to i wanted a dog that was easy to train loyal to me but friendly to every one else great with other dogs, cats, and kids and now i have six of them and all are different to each other.
and by the way a very big welcome and i hope you fine your true blue aussie koolie Pup.gif

Royalla, is Spice your first Koolie? Before her you had?

Welcome. I'm pretty new to the forum too. You'll like it here. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. I don't think you'll find an unbiased opinion about Koolies here though. I never knew there were so many koolie lovers out there until now. For me, there is nothing that equals the koolie personality. They are so active and yet so loving and gentle. They just love to be a part of your life and everything you are doing.

Casey, my previous koolie, really knew how to work a party too. She would circulate and spend just the right amount of time getting pats from everybody so that everyone there loved her. I've heard of other koolies doing this too so it could be a common koolie trait?

I've been looking for a new puppy too and there are some very nice ones in Gunnedah. I decided Gunnedah was too far away for me and have been looking for something closer. I think I might have found one now though. Cross fingers!

Anyway, Good luck and welcome

My Wal does this too, although until now I hadn't thought of it as a typical breed behaviour - I'd thought it was just him.
My father used to hold regular bbqs where he'd invite a whole bunch of ppl from his work and Wal would move quite systematically through the group asking for the ball to be thrown - going from one person to the person sitting next to them, usually just getting each person to throw it once or twice, getting to the end and then heading back up the line. It really messed up the effort I'd put into not reinforcing demands for a game lol but it was very endearing.

My boy Tully came from Gunnedah, he is such a sweet dog.. so bold and calm, I believe he will be a fantastic working dog, i have very high expectations for him both in farm work and as a Utility trialer. surprised1.gif

Royalla, is Spice your first Koolie? Before her you had?

yes she was my very first koolie, i had a pick of her or her brother but i feel for spice she will always be my No.2 special girl.
before spice i had gypsy my little shi tzu cross 3 1/2kgs of agility mad fur ball but she was and is getting old so i was after some thing to take her place with agility and also to do obedience with i never did obedience with gypsy as she did not need it and when i first got her from the pound she had broken ribs and was under weight and very scared of men, gypsy is No. 1 special girl. also i did have a border collie Kearby i loved him but my hubby hated him so i had to re home him to keep the peace, i should of re homed the hubby back then lol. and before that we had Image a very sweet and gentle stumpy tail cattle dog and before her was Dutches also a cattle dog very smart and very gentle both image and dutches never picked fights with other dogs and they never heeled anyone or any thing.

Koolies are a great choice - lots of fun, very sociable, hard working, loyal, intelligent, and stunning lookers. They come in long coats too - this is Perry who is the best and most beautiful koolie in the world and lives with me:

Perry's passions in life are balls and sheep and I am not sure which is her favourite - she has just spent a wonderful weekend at sheepdog school at Binalong near Yass and is now fast asleep recovering and dreaming about sheep.

Perry was a rescue from Armidale.

Hi Kelli and welcome. I am pretty new here too and haven't had a Koolie very long. We rescued our boy Choccy from the Lost Dogs Home in Melbourne just after Australia Day this year. I am so taken with the breed already and will always have one around. Choccy is brilliant with the kids as well as the rest of our extended animal family. I am all for rescuing - they seem to know what you have done and respond accordingly. You wind up with a very loyal friend.

Good luck finding your own special Koolie and I look forward to chatting with you.

Regards
Nikki

Hi Kelli and welcome2.gif !!!
I had never heard of koolies until earlier this year when I was looking for a dog. I came across them on a rescue site - there was a litter available - but I was too late to get one of the litter. So I did a little further research and found they were the sort of dog I was after. A dog that would be a challenge to train (being smart) but one that would probably let me go as far as I wanted to in training - if I'm a good enough trainer that is!
I'm very happy with Paxy she has a lively, cheeky personality and even my hubby who is not a dog person has fallen for her! woof.gif
kelli
thanks for the warm welcome, sorry for being slow in my reply , ive had my grandparents up from the coast for a visit, to answer your questions, im interested in koolies because i ride horses and want a dog that can come along with me on the trail, that can go all day, but as someone above mentioned i to dont like kelpies because they can be a bit scatty and dont like heelers due to aggression, i also love the colours available, i love the red merles

ive been looking at pics on here and there are some gorgeous dogs

Welcome Kelli,
Great name one of my Koolie girls is Kelli.

Hope you have a great time and learn all you need too.

Have you thought of a rescue??

JackieH
Welcome Kelli

My Koolies keep me company when I go riding. You will have to look a long way to find another dog to measure up to them. I sometimes do 15 20 km rides with my horses and take all the dogs, they would do twice that and still look for more. They just love it!! Horseriding, swiming, bikeriding whatever you are doing they want to be in on it.

Best of luck with your search... If you are after an adult I know of a few relatives of my girls that are available.

kelli
yes i would consider an adult but id want a bitch and being an adult i would want trial period to make sure she fit into our house
royalla
hi kelli
you can't go wrong with a female koolie they are so loveing.
but i have a question for you, can you tell me about the country side around Gwabegar like how hot it gets there in summer is it flat or hilly country and is it sheep or cattle country my mum has found a house there that she likes the look of. but the problem with my oldies is mum can't take the heat and dad hates the cold lol
Tjukurpa
California.gif Hey Kelli great to see you've made yourself at home, now don't hold back ask lots of questions, this mob love nothing better.

Diello.gif You'll have to post some horse photos and tell us all about yourself, seems lots of Koolie owners share their love with horses so you've got lots in common.

welcome2.gif to the win.gif Koolie forum on the internet, I know your just going to love it here.

woof.gif And all the best locating the right Koolie for you, as you have read there are loads of options, rescues, adults, juniors as well as pups.

If someone interests you drop them a PM to get more info.

JackiH was right there are a couple of her Koolie female relatives available, they're from Sheringa Kennels they have one very nice blue merle tri female about 15 months or so, she is just a dream, they might be willing to part with her.
I've attached a photo for you all to drool over.
She stayed with us for a time, she is very loyal and easy to train.
I know they will agree to a trial period, in fact they'll insist on one.

Kelli

I have two Sheringa girls and another to come and I cannot rave enough about them!!

I know what you mean about red merles. When I was looking for a Koolie a couple of years ago that was all I wanted as well. I just love the red colour.
Ceejay
I am also partial to reds both in the koolies and the wine. lol. When I was waiting expectingly for the litter to arrive I was so hoping for a solid red koolie but there weren't any so I then picked on a red merle girl and in the photo all you could see was Ceejay's bum going at it at the teat. lol.

What I have noticed with my girls as one is a koolie the other is a kelpie x. Is that Ceejay has stamina where as Izzy has short spurts of speed and has to rest whilst Ceejay is still running around the house at a million miles an hour and telling Izzy off for not keeping up.

BTW TJ that is one beautiful looking girl from Sheringa.
Peejy
Sheringa Opal is a beauty, gorgeous markings and colours.. I love the tri- merles! wub.gif
