Hi guys,
My name is Niki, I'm a vet student at sydney uni, I have 4 dogs ( 1 BC, 1 cattle, 1 staffy x italian greyhound and a koolie pup.)
I compete in agility with my staffy x and my cattle dog. I am also currently looking for a new home for my koolie
Mainly because she is not fitting in well at home (not getting enough exercise because I dont have as much time as estimated and not getting along with my cattle dog bitch.). I wish we could keep her though shes such a darling.
Anyway, hello to everyone!

nikivds hope you enjoy your time here with us.
Please feel confortable to post a photo of your girl, her name and details.
Do you know much of her history, who bred her, where she comes from.
If you have photos of her parents or family they would be great to see as well.
Every bit of information helps the new owner to know her better.
If you are a member of the Koolie Club of Australia, send her photo and details to tjukurpa@paciic.net.au and we will publish them in this months Koolie newsletter, which is sent all over Australia, NZ, Tassi and America so she will get good coverage and a new home in no time.
All the best

Hi Niki and welcome.

Sorry that you're not able to keep your Koolie.
(Btw, I'm working on getting into Vet Science - at UQ - so might need to pick your brain at some point, if that's ok. What year are you in? I hope to start next yr, but my dog has been sick, so might need to work for another yr to pay off his bills.)

More info on Belle-
Evelyndi Silverbelle
7months, tri colour (blue merle with tan points), speyed female, one 1/2 blue eye, one with blue spot, HUGE ears, VERY active, very lanky.
Registered with Koolie club and DOGS NSW
Has begun basic obedience and agility training, not at all food motivated, works on instinct and also toy driven.
Well socilaised (used to attend local dog park regularly, trains at agility club weekly) although seems to have a problem with alpha bitches.
Prefer country home as she doesn't seem happy in the suburbs, she is jumping our (1.6m) fences, barking and pestering the other dogs. She is walked daily and does some agility or ball fetching every day but this is obviously not enough for her and being a student and part time vet nurse I just dont have time to give her more.
I would love her to go somewhere she can work.
Also I dont know her breeding because she came from a litter at a rescue in newcastle. The people said they are pretty sure the parents are 2 working koolies from a nearby property that they know but neither are registered.
I am asking for $300 ono to cover health costs such as vaccination, worming, spey etc
The more people pass this on the better, thanks guys!

I know it's pretty expensive, but have you considered SABS (Kersti Seksel's practice) which I think is in Manly (?? Sydney, anyway) to see whether the issues between your dogs can be resolved? She's the best imo.
nikivds
Apr 25 2008, 06:04 PM
I had a look at SABS and sent them an email about my situation. I'll see what they say regarding cost but I think that will be the major issue here (being a uni student and all

)

Yes, they are quite famous for their prices lol. I don't know of any dogs treated by them for fighting (although I'm sure they do it) but some that I've known of that have been treated for anxiety are like totally different dogs after. You look at them and cannot believe that they were ever anxious. (And to have worked with someone like Kersti or Gaille is, imo, probably a really good experience to have had when in practice - they're good at cutting through myths in what they teach you).

it sounds like something I'd like to persue with my staffy x who is a bit iffy about other male dogs when on lead.
As a family, we have already decided to sell belle as she is clearly unhappy at home and needs more space, time and definitely work so we won't be getting behavioural training on her.

OK, Don't do another thing......I know that girl! Sydney or Camperdown park maybe? I am just down the road from you at Enmore. I have two entire (but suprelorined boys). Pest one appears in my Icon, Pest two is his full brother.
http://koolie.net/exons/index.php?showtopic=1277Gawd, the last thing I need is another dog, but lets put our thinking caps on.
We must be able to work something out for this girl, my boys are also from Newcastle/Hunter area. ssull@iprimus.com.au please email me.

Hey guys,
Wow you've all been so helpful!!
The only parks I go to is bayview dog beach near pittwater/newport and the local park "field of dreams" at turramurra so you may have seen belle there?
Otherwise she has come to 1 or 2 of my agility trials to watch so you might have seen her there
Thanks for putting her in the newsletter and I hope she finds a home where she gets the attention she deserves.

Niki - welcome to the forum. Someone else who might be able to help you is Steve Courtney (www.k9force.net). He is excellent at dealing with dog problems and is also relatively inexpensive - he is up at Kurrajong Heights so it is not too bad to get to either from where you are.
That is a gorgeous pup.

Hi Niki and welcome to the forum. You will definately get help in finding a new home for your girl here for sure. I'm sorry that the situation didn't work out but sometimes these things are beyond our control. I am always tempted to get another koolie (I have two dogs one koolie, one kelpie x) but have to remind myself that I need to concentrate on the two bundles of energy I have got, but gee sometimes it is ever sooo tempting.
Don't feel guilty or bad about Belle you tried your best and rest assured you are doing the right thing.

Here is some hugs to make you feel better.

I still love my dogs, all of thema re great in their own individual ways and I think 4 really was a bit much for me, especially considering how much i care for my staffy x, there's not much space in my heart or my life for another dog. I wish I had realised sooner.

You didn't just dump her in a pound like so many others do when they discover it's not working.
You are giving her the best chance at finding the very best home and family.
So don't beat yourself up over making the best possible decision for her.

Hi everyone, I'm just giving Belle a bit of a bump for Niki. A friend of mine has a small property at Cooma and was interested in getting a Koolie, mostly to discourage foxes as he does not run stock at all there, and likes to keep the native fauna around. I'm trying to get on to him to give Belle a go. It is only a maybe though as he was not planning on getting a dog just yet, and this just came up.He researched the breed and was impressed of course!
It would be great if forum people would still bear her in mind

Belle really is a very sweet dog she just really needs to be worked so if anyone knows of somehwere she can go, maybe even temporarily tht would be great as she is causing a lot of trouble here.

Hi Niki:
How's the effort going with rehoming your girl.
Just remember that Koolie rescue can help, so you don't need to turn to the pound in desperation.
If you choose to surrender her to the rescue you will need to understand how the rescue works.
The Koolie's we rescue are usually on the kill list and have no options.
Koolie rescue, has many times paid for releases and flight tickets to Vic, we desex, micro-chip, remain the second contact for life, inoculate, vet and temperament check every single rescue and then rehome them to the best homes and families for nothing.
When we accept surrenders we ask the owners to help us out, as we know they want the very best for their dogs and understand that every little bit helps.
So they agree to desex, if it hasn't been done, bring inoculations up to date, micro-chip, provide a twenty kilo bag of dog food for their first months care and when necessary, pay for their Koolie's ticket to Vic, where they will remain in care, (we don't have a kill policy)until the right home is found for them, and again the dog is rehomed for nothing.
Now you might ask why do we rehome for nothing;
The answer is quite simple, because we are matching good Koolie's who have fallen on hard times through no fault of their own, to genuine people who will offer them the best home with lots of love, it have never been about the money, we do this for the love of the breed, not to come out even or god forbid make a profit.
But it is also our choice and this is how we have chosen to rehome Koolie's not run a business.
Many Koolie's have been rehomed successfully all around Australia to wonderful homes and families who have been very happy to pay for their new Koolie's plane ticket, because there are no other fees.
So while it continues to work, we will continue to care in this manner.
So Niki if you do need help, don't think you are alone.
just let us know.

Hey guys!
We have decided to try to keep belle for a while as there is no real interest in her for a good home and it is not as hard as I thought keeping them apart as long as we're vigilant. She's on a hectic agility training schedule now so she's always tired which is great and we are doing some work from the "dog listener dvd" which seems to be working. Thanks for all your help and I hope belle behaves so we can all be a big happy family.

I am so happy to hear that. As I told you, my Alby was a little Brat until he was one, and then suddenly he grew up one day and is mostly a dream now. I am sure everything will work out fine, the girls will sort out their dominance issues, and if you keep Belle busy, as you are, half your probs will disapear. BTW, on your Icon you have pic of all four of them which looks really cute. Any chance of seeing a full size version, and some agility pics of Belle. She is such an attractive dog.

QUOTE(nikivds @ May 22 2008, 10:54 PM)

By the way does anyone else' koolie have a serious passion for water? every where we go with water she either has to swim or fish things out like leaves and sticks (very handy at home she keeps the pool clean!)
Glad you're feeling able to manage things Nikki.
Before Wal came to live with us (up till 9mths) he would take any opportunity to swim around and around in the dam. When he came to live with us he belonged to my sister, and she hardly ever took him swimming. But since he became mine (at about 5 - I had to nag for yrs to get him lol) he's been going fairly often to the beach and a lagoon, and he
loves to be in the water, but generally not to have his feet off the bottom.

Good to hear that you're keeping her Niki! Maybe as she matures more she will settle down. Paxy has only just started obedience at CGC and is exhausted the next day. She had her third lesson last night and she is lovely and quiet today! We live very close to Lake Macquarie and the first time Paxy saw the water she sniffed it and then just barged straight in as far as her lead would let her. Yesterday let her off lead as no other dogs were around and she bounded straight out into the water then suddenly realised she had to swim!
That is a great photo of the four dogs, all four are looking at the camera! And I love Belle digging in the sand!

Ooh yes Koolies and water goes hand in hand. Ceejay even plops into little puddles, muddy puddles especially after we have rain. They have their own water trough here (have another dog Izzy Kelpie x who also loves water) and hop into it at every opportunity they can get. I love the photos too of all your dogs sitting down. They are a lovely bunch.

Oh, swimming...thank god there is a sympathetic ranger at the Sydney Park duck pond! Mine would live in the water if they could. That is actually our group aspiration, to go live somewhere close to a dam or a river. Gorgeous photo btw.
Nikki, remember one thing, there are a lot of dogs and their owners out there who have bad manners. The thing about Koolies is that they will respond appropriately to a perceived threat or whatever. They are very doggy dogs. The amount of times I have had to tell other owners to deal with their own dogs nonsense, which has done nothing but provoke a natural response in mine, I can't remember. I have no hesitation however in saying in "hey you, take you pit bull, nutty lab or shar pei somewhere they can socialise properly". I stick up for my guys every time. They are not bad dogs, just real dogs. Be assertive. Koolies are good guys!

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the responses! She is a very amazingly well behaved dog for a 8month old, really the only thing she does wrong is her ting with dotti ad she has a tendency to lunge at other dogs when she's on lead but she has now learnt that when i say leave it she lies down next to me and stops being an idiot (for a few mins atleast) which is nice. She is amazingly good at agility already she can do almost everything! I haven't got any photos yet because we only train at night but i will take a vid of us training in the backyard. In the mean time here is the photo of the four of them and some piccies off belle on holidays for a weekend at colo river reserve!
