i need a 22 foxie's one for each room of the house and a half a dozen for down stairs under the house. last night i watched the mice run across the yard from the paddocks to the house i knew it was going to be a bad night so i got up at 4am and just stood in the kitchen watching and then i cried there were mice on the table even tho i stood the table legs in water, their were mice on the kitchen bench, in the pantry, hanging of the curtain and i had moved my tool box late last night and the spot that it had been sitting was covered in mouse droppings and i was that cheesed of with what the mice had been doing behind the box i just went to bed as i had been cleaning up mouse droppings all day they had eaten the lino away. all my traps had gone of but i only have seven in them i had even set up a bucket of water with the bottle over it that had only managed to get one. THE CAT was in the kitchen all night and slept on the chair yes i dumped her of it and swore at her she just looked at me stupid and while i have sat here this morning 4 mice have touched my foot and out at the feedlot on Saturday i heard 2 men talking about mice biting them while they were sleeping one bloke was bitten on the face and the other on the arm now if a mouse gets up on my bed that will be the last straw. how do you get rid of them please any handy tips will be used even if they don't work i will try it. i can't put bait out because of mirra, komo, and dance like to eat them is their a dog safe bait.

Royalla did a bit of searching on the net, peppermint oil soaked cotton balls. Won't kill them but will keep them away from the house and kitty litter with the remnants of kitty in it, urine etc apparantly this will also keep them away. And another is kitchen scraps with fertilizer through it, but I don't know whether you would do this with the dogs. I will keep searching for you I am sure there has to be something out there.

Is everybody up there having the same problem? I have family at Wondai - I think you're in that area aren't you? - and they haven't mentioned anything. (22 Foxies...sigh...)

Royalla there isn't any commercial grade poisons out there, all can harm your dogs. I looked at the ingredients in all three common types and all can be harmful. I even looked up natural kill stuff but they just recommended boarding up your house so mice cannot get in....YEA RIGHT! I will do another search later being a librarian I have my ways, but gotta do housework now.

yes wondai is 33kms away but if they live in town they will only be getting the odd ones as there is enough house's for the mice to spread out and enough people baiting them and trapping them to keep the numbers down in the towns but out here there is just my house the next house is about a k away and has grain silos then the piggery which also has grain silos and the hay shed here has about 50 round bales and 100 normal bales of hay in it and all bales have mouse holes in them

No, they don't live in town. But they haven't got a crop (of peanuts) this yr, and they have only got a small number of cattle atm, I think, so I guess they haven't got much for the mice to eat.

I'm afraid I'd be packing my bags and dogs and going.
Lived through one nightmare mouse plague, couldn't do it again at my age, no way.

We have pits filled with 44s drums and they were filled with cero and every morning we'd set them on fire and burn them full to the top of mice.

Every piece of furniture was standing in wide buckets of scented water to deter them.

We had tin cupboards to keep our food safe and old disused fridges to leaves our food and clothing in.

Naphthalene flakes were uses in the bathroom and closed spaces.

And every day we would sweep hundreds of mice out of the house, it was shocking and it went on for 3 months then the food sources ran out, and it got cold and they moved on.

The next year we had flea plague and I can't tell you which was the worst, at least you could see the mice coming, mum ended up moving us all to the city until it was over, that was cool we stayed by the seaside.

You have our sympathies Royalla, hope you succeed in getting rid of them.

It sounds really bad Royalla. My SIL is in Mt Isa atm and apparently woke up with mouse poo in her bed much to her horror.

I'm staying with Mum at the moment and was telling her about your mice she said she remembers when she was younger they had a plague and the legs of everything were put in old kero tins to stop the mice running up the legs of tables and getting into the undies drawers! Then they had a grasshopper plague and she said everything green got eaten, green spots on dresses, the chooks ate them and they had pink eggs (for some reason turned the yolk pink).

Can't offer any help. Hope Summa and her babies are being left alone. Napthalene sounds good, maybe Ceejay can find something that'll be handy and effective.

Sounds like things are really escalating...at least so far that isn't a problem here. Have a look at the bait Talon, that is the only one we use because it is safe for animals that feed on the mice, such as owls. Min is a shocking scrounger and will eat the deadies but has never had a problem although we grab them off her if we get the chance. Not that we have the volume you're dealing with. We set up bait stations in strategic areas by using a 20 litre bucket with a stick in it leaning on the edge, put some bait in the bottom and add a few chook pellets or grain to entice them in, then put a board on top with a solid brick on it leaving a crack for the stick (mice seem to like to squeeze in they seem to think it must be something they aren't supposed to have so must be good) and put it in a corner or behind something so it isn't in the dogs pathway, but where mice snoop around and they generally find it pretty quickly and then go off to die. Pity we aren't closer because these koolies love mousing, they look funny standing around a bale of hay staring intently at the base waiting for the tractor to lift it so they can pounce as the mice hightail it.

You would not believe this Royalla I found one product that is safe to use on other animals....but is only available online in UK, USA and Canada. Down the bottom of the page there is a phone number or email them to see whether they can send it to Australia, if not maybe ask them what you can use that is available here. Natrocell Technoligies came up with the product and Ilex Organics sell it in the UK. I have looked at videos of mice plagues and mouse plague programs....if you had a plane hmm. I now know the breeding cycle of mice, when they do breed to plague proportions and what signs to look out for before it hits.

My only other suggestions is start breeding owls. lol.

i have six hawks and Mirra LOL the cat Mia thinks that catching mice is beneath her i rang a pest control bloke and asked him and he said that any bait that has Bromadiolone in it is safe to use as that stops it from affecting any animals that eat the dead mice and mum still had some Tom Cat mouse baits left and they have Bromadiolone in them so a put seven baits out 2 hours ago now there is only two left and it's not night time yet and i can just imagine the smell in the next couple of days so i may have to move to mums after all lol

When the snakes go or go to sleep for the winter we have boat loads of mice and rats and white tail rats, not in your numbers but still lots.

I get the Tom Cat II wax baits, they have a hole through the middle of them so you can tie them up with string behind furniture where the dogs cannot get. Apparantly they don't effect dogs or whatever eating the carcasses. Anyway I have been using them for four or five years with great success and no casualties.

At the moment I am using Raticum which advertises that is is safe from secondhand poisoning of dogs and cats. It also comes in wax baits as well. I put them inside the cupboards or draws where the dogs cannot get or mice are least likely to drag left overs out for the dogs to get.

Seems to work.

yes i tied the baits in place all are gone table should start growing leaves soon it is standing buckets of water but that did not stop them there is now little green poos all over the table i have 12 traps and i was emptying them as they trapped a mouse last night and all were full this morning and two of the traps had two mice in them at once i have those humane traps that catch the mice without hurting them they seem to work the best the thing that i don't like is you have to drown/ kill the mice and then get rid of them i am glad that i have some big meat ants nest

Poor Royalla! I have never been through what you're experiencing and i pray i never do! I would have to lay bait and get the dogs out! Speak to your local vet and i'm sure they will understand the need for you to have some Vitamin K on hand just in case! I really hope that they clear out soon! But please encourage them to head East or West, anywhere but South! I don't think i would cope well at all!
