It's nice to see the blue's get a run! She has developed beautifully you can be very proud of her. Looking back through her photos I realised for the first time her eyes reflect the flash with one red and one green. It's interesting because most of our reflect green but one reflects red...just another question...WHY?
royalla
yes i noticed that to maybe it was just the angle and the light was fully in the red eye or maybe it has something to do with the tiny bit of blue marbling she has in the eye that is reflecting back red you can just see a bit of a chip in the last pic's, i know when i shine the torch on my dogs their eyes reflect back mostly green or red but i do have a couple that reflect back blue Kerrie's boy Komo reflected back blue and i fine it very interesting as well
Penny Nalder
Isn't that interesting. All mine reflect red, and I thought that's the only colour they went. It has to be to do with the amount of rods and cones at the back of the eye. I can't remember exactly how it goes, but some cells in the retina are cone shaped, and some are rod shaped, each sees better in different lights. Nocturnal animals have more of one, and diurnal animals more of the other.

I've done a quick search and this seems to be a good explanation.

The colored reflection from the eyes of dogs comes from a layer of tissue at the back of the eye (the choroid) that contains blood vessels, brown pigment cells, and, in most dogs, a shiny cell layer (the tapetum) covering mostly the upper half. This tapetum probably improves animals’ vision at night. It may be yellow, green, blue, orange, or variations in between those colors. So the tapetum is the usual source of a dog’s eye reflection. Some dogs, though, have very small tapeta or none at all and they show a very dull reflection or none at all. In other dogs, especially dogs with certain hair coat colors (liver, orange-brown) or with blue eyes (irises), very little pigment is present in the back of the eye and the blood vessels that are normally hidden by this pigment are visible and make the reflection bright red.

The most common reflection I've seen in dogs is green and orange. Paxy's eyes reflect red - something I hadn't seen before so I was quite intrigued by this. As dogs age you can usually see the cloudiness from a cataract that forms and this is a dull grey and not the bright reflection at night you get when a dog's eyes are in good health and you can usually still see the cataract in daylight.
Ceejay
Wow, that is interesting about the eye colour. I have always wondered why Ceejay's eyes reflected red as I have never seen a dog's eyes do this.
Penny Nalder
Well, that explains why all mine reflect red! 3 with orange/brown coats, and one with blue eyes... :-)
