Okay I know this is a koolie forum but I thought someone out there might know. Do Kelpies have a tendency to howl? Izzy has what we call her happy howl, she does it in the morning when we wake up, she does it when either of us get home. She has also done it a few times when I am serving up their dinner and she does it when she is very very happy or excited. It is not a problem as she doesn't do it for a prolonged period it just sounds wonderful to me. She has only started getting into it the last three months. I found out she could howl at the herding clinic in April when she realised what herding was about and I put her back into the crate and then watched Ceejay working the sheep. That was a lamentation of the fact that she wasn't out there herding the sheep. lol. And it does sound wonderful her happy howl. Can someone satisfy my curiosity whether it is a kelpie trait?

Hi Ceejay,
I would think like Royalla... Some dogs howl and it doesnīt depend on breed at all. My kelpie doesnīt howl and I havenīt heard any other kelpies to do it either.
Your Izzy may be very emotional dog... :)

Yes she is an emotional dog, lol. She doesn't whine thank goodness, but you can tell when she has the sulks. It would be interesting to hear of anyone elses dogs that do this, Happy Howling.
Royalla out of interest how loud is Gypsy, due to her size?

One of our cocker spaniels did this when my brother came home from school, work etc - she was his dog and she didn't stop until he greeted her! It's basically an attention seeking thing but if that's all they do and you're happy for them to do it then meh! It's nice to get a welcome sometimes!!

Some of our koolies do it, we call it more of a yodel generally when they are happy and anticipating something good, like tea or a good run with the motor bike or the like. Like the side on greeting it seems to be reserved the most joyous occassions.

If I've been out without the dogs when I get back JC does the talking thing to me, probably telling me off, Pebbles bends, like this ), & comes side wards to me & Izzi does the bow & then wags her whole body, it's hard to pat them all at once LOL.
