There is a lot of debate regarding males and desexing (and females too). Some vote for leaving them intact unless they show signs of unwanted male traits, some vote for desex unless you want to breed. A lot of people leave desexing until the growth plates have finished which varies from breed to breed, this is especially noted for large breeds, but I think with a koolie would be around 12 mths. There is now the new implant injection (which I think Shaunagh's dogs are on), which apparently works really well but only lasts 6 months, but at least you can see if it makes a difference to their behaviour before you desex! It's called Suprelorin .
Pound puppies are often desexed at 8 weeks of age before being given to their new owners. Vets will generally tell you to desex around 4 to 6 months, with some dependency on the size of your dog.

Hi Rainy
Welcome to the forum also.
As far as I know the rule of thumb is when they can grab em they can cut em! The only one I have had done was a chihuahua at 5 months, so they were pretty small and there was no hassle. I think the younger the better before they develop the strutting and the piddling, he is just a nice little dog until another male is around when for a week or so after he will start cocking his leg to pee. Then goes back to puppy squatting - much better if you like gardening.

I am going to try Rocco on the implant injection as he is related to my girls and I don't want any mistakes to happen... does anyone know how it affects adult male dogs?? does it change their behaviour at all??

I usually wait till the 6month period with either sex of dogs. I have not had a problem yet, hormones don't seem to come into play until after this I have found, but that is just in my experience. Call your vet and see what their opinion is?
