Hey guys its been a while since i'v posted anything well apart from letting u all know that i now have my breeding prefix name, so what has happened since is that i have moved to a bit of property we are now out of town its only a rental but its great we have 7 arces and its no where near a busy highway, so its been fun moving and its been even better unpacking boxes that have been stored for months!!!! even better finding stuff i even forgot i had, i found the card i brought yrs ago that first got me interested in the Koolie. So has anyone seen this card before and does anyone know whos these Koolies belong 2???? it is only a photo of the card as i havent got my scanner hooked up yet!!!! and here are some pics of the new place and property!!!!

I think the card belongs to Norm's coolies, see this link
http://www.pleasetakemeto.com/australia/ba...ep-dogs-9002221I don't know much about him but I'm sure there are others here who can tell you more.
Nice pics of your new place, looks like it's a nice set up for you.

That card is sold in all post offices over here. It does not say on the card who they belong to.

they are norm's koolies which from what i have seen on the internet and T.V they are a cross between a koolie and a border collie, i know that he tells every one that these dogs are his own line of koolies that he has developed himself and from the video that i watched of his dogs they act more like borders then koolies when they work. but still he does have every pretty dogs

they are very pretty koolies on that card, royalla from what i have read (and my experience with a koolie x bc) koolies dont crouch when they herd they work in a more upright position, is that right? raz when he herds the ball crouches which i believe is the border collie in him (correct me if im wrong)
great looking place I bet your dogs will enjoy it there :)
as much as i love the look of the longer coated koolie i think i would struggle more with the hair, raz's hair is so fine its awesome considering he is an inside boy.
Does anyone else's koolies shiver in the cold? he was shivering last night so i covered him over with 2 blankets

As for do my koolies shiver in the cold, sure do!!!! i have coats 4 my babies and they have old doonas and sleeping bags in their kennels( not that i know y i put them in every kennel as 3 of my dogs like 2 sleep in the one kennel)

I doubt if Norm's Coolies (he likes to use a C) are crosses, they are more likely to be exhibiting the results of many many years of line breeding to a pheonotype of his choosing. Just because they are long haired and might crouch a bit doesn't mean they aren't pure koolies. We have a long haired koolie with a 98% pure DNA result, some like Jackies get into a crouch to work it's just the majority don't. He certainly has concentrated the bidibility we all credit the koolie with in his line. It would be great to have a dna from them just to see whether they constitute another family group within the breed after so much line breeding or whether they cross over some of the family groups already found.

Hi Sil i was not going by the long hair or the crouch as a couple of my koolies here crouch but the show that i which on T.V with his dogs working they worked like my borders that i had Ellie mainly as she was a fully trained trail dog and Lucy it was just the style of how they worked i only feel that his first dogs may have been a koolie x borders which is a good working dog i know i have Quin here lol

You don't think your BC's might have worked like koolies?

oh ok that is interesting...i always thought raz crouching was the BC in him now it could be either :) I like to think he is more koolie than BC

Kylie,
I can confirm the dogs in the card are Norm's Coolies (I am good friends with Norm). See more pictures of his dogs at
Norm's CooliesTo say that norm's dogs are crossed with Border Collies is incorrect and grossly inaccurate. Norm would be greatly offended to hear of anyone talk about his dogs in this manner. He's spent 40 years breeding them to work in a certain manner and have a certain type of look. I've had BCs in the past and the nature and characteristics of Norm's Coolies have no similarity to BCs.
I have one of Norm's Coolies and he displays no behavioural charactereistics of BCs, he behaves like a Coolie, looks like a Coolie and works like a Coolie because he is a Coolie. Norm's had no outside influence in his breeding, he's selected his dogs with great care a long time ago and has continued to breed them along the same line for 40 years, which is longer than some breeders that I have seen that claim they have Koolies.
I think it is very unfair to judge Norm's dogs without the facts.

Perry is long coated and her coat is so easy to look after - she gets brushed and bathed once ever six weeks - it does not knot or matt and dirt just falls out of it. It was minus 9.5 in our garden on Tuesday morning at 7.30am when the dog bath man came and she was not feeling the cold except on her paws.
Perry will sometimes crouch when she is working - especially if she is taking on an obstreperous sheep. Mostly she works upright.
I would like to see Norm's Coolies in action.

Norm is sending me a DVD of his dogs at work (actually it's my parents posting it on his behalf). I'll be using some clips on the
Norms Coolies website when I finally receive the DVD. Fingers crossed I'll have it soon and the video footage up by next weekend.
Soon as I have it up I will let all and sundry know...

Shane we have several members and know of many more breeders who have bred their lines for 40 years or more, Frank Kelm our patron has bred koolies true for over 60 years. They are all extremely careful about the dogs and lines they use, the difference is Norm has developed a strain by not breeding to any outcross k/coolies. From the DNA research we have done within the K/Coolie breed there is good genetic diversity but also many pure dogs in each family. There are eight distinct family groups so far. It would be great to DNA a couple of Norms just to say there is a nineth family.
