Dog owners can treat minor injuries for their pets if they have the appropriate remedies, tools, and equipment available. The following items were included in a first aid kit that the Cincinnati Veterinary Medical Association gave to police dog handlers at a recent workshop. A home first aid kit needs many of the same items.

smile.gif Gauze sponges -- 50 four-by-four inch sponges, two per envelope
smile.gif Triple antibiotic ointment
smile.gif Rubbing alcohol
smile.gif Ear syringe -- two ounce capacity
smile.gif Ace self-adhering athletic bandage -- three-inch width
smile.gif White petroleum jelly (Vaseline or similar)
smile.gif Eye wash
smile.gif Sterile, non-adherent pads
smile.gif Pepto Bismol tablets
smile.gif Generic Benadryl capsules -- 25mg, for allergies
smile.gif Hydrocortisone acetate -- one percent cream
smile.gif Sterile stretch gauze bandage -- three inches by four yards
smile.gif Buffered aspirin
smile.gif Dermicil hypoallergenic cloth tape one inch by 10 yards
smile.gif Hydrogen peroxide
smile.gif Kaopectate tablets maximum strength
smile.gif Bandage scissors
smile.gif Custom splints
smile.gif Vet Rap bandage

Other suggested items were:

Blanket
Tweezers
Muzzle
Hemostats
Rectal thermometer
Ziplock bags
Paperwork, including the dog's
health record
medications
local & national poison control numbers
veterinary clinic hours & phone numbers
emergency clinic hours & phone number
